Game #6- Scecina Memorial v. Cascade 9/6/23

The Lady Cadets soccer team (4-1, 2-1 ICC) rounded out their early ICC game schedule last night when they hosted the Scecina Memorial Lady Crusaders (2-2, 1-1 ICC). With Cascade’s anticipated move to the Western Indiana Conference next season, this will probably be the last meeting between these schools for some time and the Lady Cadets hold a 3-1 advantage over Scecina in the conference games these two teams have played. Last season, the Cadets and Lady Crusaders were tied at the half but the Cadets exploded for three goals in the second half and pulled out a 3-1 victory. With a series of four non-conference games in a row over the next two weeks, last night’s Cascade v. Scecina Memorial was a very valued game for the Cadets. If they could get a win, they would move up an extra spot in the conference standings and put themselves in better position for the end of the season game against Speedway. A loss would disrupt all of those plans and make a 2nd place finish in conference almost impossible. A defensive mistake which led to an early goal being conceded by the Cadets made the plans of victory even harder but the Cadets rallied with a goal of their own with 32:00 remaining in the first half. Creedance Chittenden’s excellent throw-in to Anna Burns set up an easily lofted shot over the Lady Crusaders head and the Cadets first goal of the game. The assist was Creedance’s second throw-in assist of the season and the goal was Anna’s seventh goal scored for the Cadets. This 1-1 tie held for the rest of the first half despite the strong offensive rhythm of the Cadets’ that led to numerous shots and crossing passes right in front of the Scecina goal. As the Cadets switched defensive ends of the field, the prevailing southwestern breeze was now in favor of the Cadets for the second half and used this breeze to continue their strong offensive rhythm. The Scecina defensive unit struggled to clear the ball cleanly out of their end of the field and the Cadets would take 10 shots in the second half with 6 shots being placed on target. The only one to reach the back of the net would be Creedance Chittenden’s shot with about 30:00 remaining. As the Crusaders restarted play with a goal kick, the ball was poorly struck and Creedance had no trouble settling the ball to strike a well positioned shot into the side of the net and giving the Cadets a 2-1 lead. There would be many other shots and passes in the second half that would be “just a little off” from great success but that didn’t damper the efforts of the Lady Cadets last night. As Creedance Chittenden and Anna Burns led the team in shots on target with 5 each, the addition of Grace Trump’s two shots on target to the stat sheet helped keep the Scecina goalkeeper on her feet all night long. The Lady Cadets couldn’t manage to score any more goals in the game but they did come away with a victory that was definitely worth the effort of the team. The 2-1 victory for the Cadets gives Scecina Memorial (2-3, 1-2 ICC) their third loss of the season as well as a key conference loss. The Lady Cadets (5-1, 3-1 ICC) now begin to focus on the toughest part of their schedule when they play the very talented teams of Greencastle, Danville, Southmont, Northview, and Speedway over the next three weeks. This gauntlet of competition for the Cadets will start this Saturday, September 9th when they travel to Greencastle as part of a Boys and Girls Varsity doubleheader starting at 11:00. The Lady Tigers are 6-0 on the season ranked #13 in the ISCA 1A poll.
