Cascade Improves to 4-2 in 4th Quarter Shootout Over North Putnam

By Connor Simmons | Sep 24, 2023 11:46 AM

Cascade ended their three game away stretch Friday Night against North Putnam Cougars. It would be the 57th meeting between the two schools with Cascade looking to extend their already three game win streak. It was a game of halves for both teams with each team waiting until late in the 2nd half to light up the scoreboard. Cadets and Cougars combined for a total of 48 points in the fourth quarter. Cadets got some help on the scoreboard from their defense and special teams which seemed to be the biggest difference maker in the game. Both defenses struggled on the night, giving up 400+ yards in the game. North Putnam won the toss and elected to receive. Cascade would force a turnover on the opening possession with JR Duncan White tracking the quarterback down from behind forcing the fumble and SO Toby Savini would recover. Cascade would force 3 fumbles on the night, recovering each of them. Cadets offense would go three and out and elect to pin the Cougars back deep on the punt. Cougars would drive the length of the field and threaten to score, but the Cadets defense would stand tall with SR Jacob Potts getting pressure on the quarterback and SR Damien Appleby would get rewarded for the sack, forced fumble and fumble recovery for a touchdown. However, after recovering the football and taking off there would be a blatant hold on the play that would bring the play all the way back to Cadet territory. On the very next play, SR Caiden Clements would break a 56 yard run down the North Putnam sideline to set up SO Brady Trebley’s first of three rushing touchdowns on the night to take a 7-0. On the Cougars next possession, they would go on a 14 play 75 yard drive to get on the board, but would miss the 2 point conversion. Cadets offense would answer with a 6 play 74 yard drive with SO Toby Savini finding the endzone from 34 yards out to extend the lead 14-6. Cadets defense would come up with a sack on Cougars next possession by JR Duncan White to force a long 3rd down. They’d get the stop they needed to, but would elect not to put a returner back deep and would be backed up on their own 12 yard line after the punt. Cascade would go on a 13 play 76 yard drive, but would turn the ball over after SO Toby Savini would be stripped 5 yards from the end zone. Cadets would go into half with a 14-6 lead. Cadets would get the ball to open the second half and North Putnam elected to kick it to SO Toby Savini would return it to midfield setting up the offense to extend their lead. On the 7th play of the drive, SO Brady Trebley would run it in from 20 yards out to give the Cadets a 21-6 lead. Cougars would answer with a 16 play 78 yard drive capping off with a 3 yard touchdown run. Cadets would go 3 and out on their next possession after getting in a long down situation. North Putnam would capitalize on a 29 yard touchdown pass bringing the gap closer 21-19 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The fourth quarter hit and this is where things got interesting between the two teams. Cadets have not been in a close battle with a team since Beech Grove early on, but they pulled away late in that game. Cougars would go on to score 19 unanswered points to take a 25-21 lead on the Cadets after two straight 3 and out possessions. On a 3rd and 10 from midfield, Cougars would connect on a 45 yard pass for a touchdown but miss the extra point. The Cascade offense would need an answer immediately to stop the momentum and they did just that only needing 5 plays to go 80 yards. SO Toby Savini would break through down the Cadets sideline for a 34 yard touchdown strike to put Cascade back on top 28-25. North Putnam would answer with one of their own going 9 plays 80 yards to give the lead back to the Cougars 32-28. Cascade defense would struggle significantly in the second half due to the Cougar offense continuously moving the chains. Cascade needed to answer again and they did just that. On the ensuing kickoff, SO Toby Savini would find a crease down the Cadets sideline and take it 90 yards to the house for his first of the year to put the Cadets back on top 35-32. On the next North Putnam possession, Cougars would face a 2nd and 8 from their own 38 yard line, but FR Lucas Farmer would come up with the gut punch and kill every ounce of momentum North Putnam had by physically take the ball from the North Putnam running back and sprinting 38 yards to the end zone for the first touchdown of his high school career and push the lead to 42-32. But North Putnam wasn’t done yet, they would drive down the field 80 yards to keep the game alive on a 14 yard touchdown run. Cadets would lead 42-39 with an Onside Kick coming. JR Daemen Mason would secure the onside kick for the Cadets and the offense would take the field. Cadets would score in just two plays with SO Toby Savini breaking a 58 yard run and SO Brady Trebley finishing it off with a 5 yard touchdown run to give them some breathing room at 49-39. Cadets defensive line would pin their ears back on the next possession and come up with three straight sacks from JR Duncan White, SR Caiden Clements and JR Josiah Murrain finishing it off. Cascade would learn a lot about the type of team they were this week after a disappointing week 5 game. A back and forth game coming down to the wire, Cadet players didn’t shy away from the moment and adversity. Cascade pushes their win streak over North Putnam to four in a row. Cascade will travel to Spencer, Indiana to take on Owen Valley Patriots (2-4) wrapping up their three game home stretch.
