After a week of practice and rest, the Lady Cadets (0-3, 0-2 Monon) stepped back onto the soccer field and hosted the Lady Mustangs of Edgewood (2-2) for their first home game of the season. Tonight’s meeting between the Lady Cadets and Lady Mustangs will only be the third time the two schools have played each other recently and both games ended in 1-0 victories for the Lady Mustangs. These two games were very competitive and exciting. The two schools were assigned to the same 2A Sectional 27 but never played each other in the tournament. Realignment has now moved the two schools into different sectionals. A decade ago, the Cadets and Mustangs were paired up in the Western Indiana Conference and played annually. An extreme heat advisory pushed the start of the game back to 7:30 p.m. and the Lady Mustangs and Lady Cadets did a really good job handling the tough weather. The first 20 minutes of the game were very balanced and both teams created excellent offensive efforts that threatened to score. The Lady Mustangs broke the game open when they slid a shot into the corner of the goal just before the 20:00 water break. The Cadets countered with three good offensive attacks over last 10:00 of the first half but were never able to get the ball into the net. The halftime score showed Edgewood 1 and Cascade 0. With a competitive first half under their belt, the Lady Cadets looked to give their best effort and tie the game with a well earned goal. Unfortunately, the second half didn’t play out the way the Cadets had hoped. The Lady Mustangs found a second goal early in the second half when a clean shot deflected by Cascade’s goalkeeper off the crossbar and into the path of two Edgewood players. The Edgewood players were able to calmly settle the ball and poke the ball in the back of the net. This second goal for Edgewood emotionally broke the Lady Cadets and the team lost all offensive flow and rhythm. A hard foul in the box by the Lady Cadets about halfway through the second half earned Edgewood a penalty kick that was struck perfectly out of the reach of the goalkeeper. The 3-0 lead energized Edgewood, and they dominated the pace of play for the rest of the game, adding one more goal with about 8:00 minutes remaining. The game ended 4-0 with Edgewood gaining a much needed victory. The 4-0 loss for the Cadet (0-4, 0-2) extends their losing streak at the start of their season to four games in a row and a consecutive losing streak to 17 games. The Mustangs’ victory improves their season record to 3-2. The Lady Cadets have a short rest on Friday and then travel on Saturday morning to Avon High School to play the Avon’s JV soccer team. After Saturday’s game, the Lady Cadets will travel to Crawfordsville High School on Tuesday, September 8th for their third Monon Conference game.
