Both teams will be tested this week on the ground attack and at the end of the game Friday Night, one team will continue their 2023 season and the other will turn in their helmets the following week. What’s at stake for both teams? Both teams want to live to see the following Monday on the practice field. Cascade will employ their heavy run wing-t offense, while Southmont will bring a multiple offensive look. It looks to be a decent weather game Friday Night night with a clear sky. Buckle up, bring your warm weather gear because IHSAA playoff football has arrived and there is one team in this game that will survive and advance to the Sectional #37 Championship game. Southmont who sits at 5-5 versus Cascade who sits at 6-4… IT’S PLAYOFF FOOTBALL! A LITTLE PIECE OF HISTORY With a 41-20 win last Friday Night over South Vermillion, Cascade clinched its second straight winning season which hasn’t happened since the 2005 & 2006 seasons. CADET NOTES Cascade will look to continue their playoff push this week against Southmont. The two teams haven’t played since 2021 where the Mounties knocked off the Cadets 21-7 in the first round of sectional play. Cascade uses a No-Huddle Wing-T attack on offense and a base 3-4 on defense. The Cadets are a young group with a bright future ahead with 9 starters on offense and 7 starters on defense being juniors or below. Cascade has had 9 fumbles in the last 5 weeks that has kept points off the scoreboard. Cascade will need to play great defense and run the football in order to have success Friday Night against a multiple offensive attack from the Mounties. Last season, Cascade dropped Greencastle 50-24 and then lost to sectional runner-up Sullivan 30-14. Southmont dropped North Knox 31-0 and played the eventual sectional 37 champion Linton-Stockton Minors and lost in a close battle 29-35. Both teams will look to improve on last year's losses in the second round. Cascade run attack versus Southmont multiple attack. Cascade has only been to two sectional championship games. In 2006, Cascade lost 33-32 to North Putnam and in 1992 saw the only sectional championship for Cascade 37-21 over Greencastle. SO Brady Trebley leads the offense that averages 355 yards per game. Trebley is completing 59% of his passes for 520 yards, 10 touchdowns and has zero interceptions on the year. Trebley also adds 4 rushing touchdowns on the ground. He looks to settle in and continue to be the leader of the no-huddle wing-t attack as the Cadets look to advance to their first sectional #37 championship since 2006. FR Rhyder Williams will serve as the back-up quarterback for the Cadets. Multiple running backs will look to carry the rock. SO Toby Savini leads the backfield with 1,056 yards, averaging 9+ yards per rush and a team high 12 touchdowns. SR Damien Appleby added 608 yards, averaging 6+ yards per carry and 9 touchdowns. SO Dayton Mink 543 yards with 8 touchdowns and SR Caiden Clements has 444 yards for 4 touchdowns. SO JT Roshong leads this group with 3 catches for 57 yards and 1 touchdown. JR Daemen Mason has 3 catches for 30 yards. Tight ends will look to be both physical blockers and pass catchers at the tight end position. Both played a vital role in the success of the rush attack, but also in the play action pass. FR Trent Austin has hauled 8 catches for 129 yards and 2 touchdowns averaging 16+ yards per reception. Four Juniors continue to anchor the offensive line for Cascade. The offensive line averages in weight a combined 200lbs. Last week, the Cadets only managed 368 yards of offense against South Vermillion with 315 yards coming on the ground. This group has led the way to a total of 3,535 total yards and 49 touchdowns through ten games. The offense averages 37+ points per game. The defensive line will look to set the tone up front against a big offensive line for South Vermillion. JR Duncan White leads the defensive line up front with 28 tackles, 11 TFL, 6 sacks and 3 forced fumble. They will need to plug holes and use their speed to contain the Mounties multiple offense which averages over 342 yards per game. The linebacking group will look to anchor the 2nd level defense. SR Jacob Potts and SR Brayden Cartmel have combined for 120 tackles and 15 tackles for a loss. SR Jackson Cornelius came off the bench and piled up 48 tackles and 7 tackles for a loss. Three Seniors lead this group and will look to play aggressive and fill the gaps against the Southmont run game that features a four year starter and 225lbs fullback. The defensive backs will look to anchor the 3rd level of the defense this week. This group is the youngest on the team with 1 junior, 2 sophomores, and 1 freshmen starting. SO Marcus Hobson came up with his second interception of the season last week returning it for 47 yards and setting the offense up with great field position. FR Lucas Farmer leads the entire defense with 78 tackles. SO Toby Savini added in 56 tackles, 1 interception, 2 fumble recoveries and 1 fumble recovery for a 70 yard touchdown. SO Marcus Hobson, SO JT Roshong and JR Daemen Mason will look to lock down the corner spots and limit the multiple offensive attack that averages 347 yards per game.
