For the second game of the Lebanon Invitational, the Lady Cadets (1-1-1) found themselves playing the Lady Vikings of West Vigo High School (1-2-1). In their 12:00 p.m. games, the Lady Cadets were soundly defeated the Lady Tigers 6-0 and the Lady Vikings lost an exciting game against Jeffersonville in a PK shootout. The Lady Cadets and Lady Vikings are members of the Western Indiana Conference and are scheduled to play each other on September 12th at West Vigo High School. After playing a game earlier in the day, both teams in the consolation game couldn’t have expected too much from their worn out teams. But the late afternoon game between West Vigo and Cascade was far better than expected. Using a 3-4-3 formation, the Lady Vikings kept the ball out of the possession of the best and fastest attacking players for the Lady Cadets. The Lady Vikings did get a couple of shots directly at the Cascade goal but for most of the game they spent most of their resources playing a strong, well organized defensive effort. The Cadets did finally get that opening goal when Anna Burns struck the ball into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season at 19:09 remaining in the first half. This 1-0 lead did allow for the Cadets to get some subs into the game so the starters could have some water breaks and rest in the game. The 1-0 lead remained all the way up to the halftime break. Once the second half started, both teams fell back to their starting positions and offensive/defensive rhythms and the Lady Cadets were still getting some small offensive breakaways that never materialized into scoring goals. As the hot weather and a couple of injuries finally caught up with both teams in the later portions of the second half, the Lady Cadets finally got a second goal that helped secure a win. Regan Franklin made a good pass up to a streaking Anna Burns who struck a good shot that was blocked by a Lady Vikings defensive player. Anna’s blocked shot didn’t go out of bounds and Anna was able to collect up the ball and take another shot from a slightly different angle. This second shot took a weird bounce right in front of the West Vigo goalie and bounced off to the side and went into the goal for her second goal of the game and sixth of the season. The second goal essentially secured the win for the Cadets as both teams started to slowly put new players onto the field. The last and final goal of the game for the Cadets was scored by Anna Burns again who lifted the ball over the head of the goal in the last seconds of the game. Anna’s third goal of the game was her second hat trick of the week and bumped up her season goals scored total to seven. The 3-0 victory over West Vigo pushes the Cadets record up to (2-1-1) after the first week of the season. The Lady Cadets soccer team now looks ahead hosting Monrovia for their first home game of the season on Tuesday, August 27th. The boys/girls doubleheader with Monrovia is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. with the boys game starting at 7:00 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs are on a two game winning streak against the Lady Cadets and were Sectional Champions the past two seasons.
