Cadets Victorious Over Bulldogs in Battle of I-70

By Connor Simmons | Oct 10, 2022 12:36 PM

Cadets traveled to Monrovia High School for their Friday Night Lights action for week eight of the season. This was the 55th meeting between the two schools with Monrovia leading the series 33-22 after the Cadets victory. Monrovia won the opening toss and elected to defer to the second half. Cascade would drive the opening possession down to the 49 yard line, but a fumble on the quarterback/running back exchange in the backfield put the Cadets in a 4th down and long situation. Cascade elected to play the field position game and used their only punt on the night on the first drive. The Bulldogs would use 9 plays and move the ball 33 yards to opponents territory, but their drive would stall out as the Cadets defense stood tall on 3rd down forcing a Monrovia punt. In punt formation, an errant snap gave the Cadets great field position threatening to score. Unfortunately, the Cascade offense could not take advantage of the opportunity and were stopped on a 4th and 2 situation. The defense headed back onto the field. Monrovia would drive down to midfield to take the ball in the beginning of the 2nd quarter. Coming out of the break, Bulldogs took a chance at throwing the football, but were intercepted by JR Damien Appleby for his first interception of the year and a big momentum swing for the Cadets. On the second play from scrimmage for the possession, FR Brady Trebley would boot right and find a wide open SR Liam Farmer for a 36 yard gain to bring the Cadets in scoring position. On the next play from scrimmage, Farmer would find paydirt for his 17th touchdown on the season and 29th of his career giving an early 7-0 lead to Cascade. The Bulldogs would answer on the ensuing drive, driving 76 yards on 11 plays and converting two 3rd down conversions to tie the game 7-7. Cascade would be set up with great field position on the kickoff return by FR Toby Savini bringing the ball down to the 40 yard line with under 5 minutes to go. The big play on the drive came when the offense faced a 3rd and 15. FR Brady Trebley was perfect on the night completing 2-2 for 54 yards. The second completion went to SR Devon Weigle for 18 yards to keep the drive moving. 6 plays later, SR Liam Farmer would find the endzone for 2nd time in the night, 18th on the season and tied the career rushing touchdown record with 30 total to give Cascade a 14-7 lead with 27.8 seconds left in the half. Monrovia would threaten to score after completing three passes for 40+ yards setting themselves up for a final attempt from 29 yards out. FR JT Roshong was able to bat the ball down as time expired and Cascade would go into the locker room with a 14-7 lead. Coming out of half, the Monrovia Bulldogs would make several adjustments and drive 70 yards on 13 plays draining 7 minutes off the clock. The big play to keep the drive alive was a roughing the kicker call on 4th and 6. The Bulldogs would use the call to their advantage and convert two more 4th down attempts and finish with a 2 yard touchdown run to tie the game 14-14 with 5 minutes to play in the 3rd. Cadets would go on a 12 play 72 yard drive to answer the Bulldogs and would take 7 minutes off the clock. The offense would go 3-3 on 3rd down attempts and finish with a 10 yard run by SR Liam Farmer for his 3rd of the night, 19th of the season and 31st for his career. Cascade would have the extra point blocked to make the score 20-14 with 9 minutes left to play. On the ensuing possession, the Bulldogs would threaten after breaking a 42 yard run to set their offense up in great field position. But the Cadets defense would stand tall forcing the Bulldogs to a 4th and 7 situation after JR Brayden Cartmel was able to get his 2nd tackle for a loss opportunity of the night. Monrovia, playing aggressive, would elect to go for it on 4th down, but would be denied after their pass attempt fell incomplete. Cascade would take back over on offense with 7 minutes left to go. Cascade would go on to take 6 minutes off the clock driving 65 yards in 12 plays. The big moment came when the Cadets faced a very familiar 4th and 2 situation from their own 42 yard line and elected to play aggressive and go for it. Against Speedway in the exact same situation, the Cascade offense was denied, however, the offensive line and SR Liam Farmer would not be denied for a 2nd time in two weeks. Farmer was able to find a crease on the right side and would fall forward for 6 yards. That seemed to be the backbreaker for the Bulldogs, Cascade would continue to milk the clock down and punch the ball into the end zone on a Farmer touchdown run for his 4th of the night, 20th on the season, 32nd of his career giving the Cadets a 26-14 lead with 2 minutes left to play. On the ensuing Bulldogs possession, SR Devon Weigle would intercept a pass to seal the victory for the Cadets and bring the I-70 Trophy back to Cascade.
