Cadets Knock Off Tiger Cubs in 2nd Half Comeback

By Connor Simmons | Oct 22, 2022 8:56 PM

Cadets rattle off 43 straight points over the visiting Greencastle Tiger Cubs to move on to Sectional 37 semifinal. Cascade hosted its former WIC rival in the first round of Sectional 37 match-up. Separated by just 16 miles, these teams would revisit their rivalry for the 47th meeting between the two teams. On the opening kickoff of the night, Greencastle would take it to almost midfield, but SO Brady Sebanc would strip the returner and JR Chase Schnarr would get the recovery for the Cadets. Cascade's offense would match right down the field in 5 plays 57 yards and Farmer would find the endzone to give the Cadets an early 7-0 lead. On the ensuing possession, the Tiger Cubs offense would go on a commanding 74 yard 14 play converting a 4th and 6 to score the touchdown to tie the game up at 7 each. On the Cadets second possession of the game, Farmer would take 5 carries down the Cadets 40 yard line, but the offense would stall out forcing a Cadet 4th and 3. Cascade would elect to play aggressive, as they always do, and go for a fake punt. JR Wyatt Nohren would race off to the left side, but the Tiger Cubs defense would rally to the football to stop Nohren and give the ball back to the Tiger Cubs in great field position. Greencastle would methodically take the rest of the 1st quarter and 4 minutes into the 2nd quarter to put points on the board for the Tiger Cubs. Cadets defense would get a big goal line stand and hold Greencastle to a field goal giving them a 10-7 lead with a little over 8 minutes to go in the half. On the ensuing possession, Cadets offense would take the ball 29 yards threatening to score, but Greencastle’s defense would come up with another 4th down stop to regain momentum of the game. Greencastle’s offense would take 4 minutes off the clock and convert a big 3rd down and 8 to take a 17-7 lead with 1 minute to go in the half. A huge turning point in the game for Cascade came on the next offensive possession for the Cadets. With 52.8 seconds to go in the 2nd quarter and down 10 points, FR Brady Trebley and the Cascade offense would execute a perfect two minute drill in 8 plays. FR Brady Trebley would find SR Devon Weigle for back to back large gains to bring the Cadets down to the 28 yard line and threaten to score. Trebley would find Farmer for a 10 yard gain stopping the clock at 7.9 seconds on the clock. Cadets just needed 18 yards to find the end zone and on the ensuing play, FR Brady Trebley would find FR Toby Savini for an 18 yard touchdown pass down the left sideline to bring the Cadets within 3 points at the half. This touchdown proved to be the game changer as Cadets would receive the opening 2nd half kickoff. Coming out of the second half, Cascade would go on a 13 play 80 yard drive taking 6 minutes off the clock. FR Brady Trebley would find SR Devon Weigle on 4th and 14 to give the Cadets a 22-17 lead. On the drive SR Liam Farmer would go down with an injury and would not return in the game. The Cadets would rally around Farmer and the team stepped up and would answer the challenge thrown their way. Cascade’s defensive adjustments in the second half were key to slowing down the Greencastle run attack. Cascade would force an immediate three and out. On the punt attempt, Greencastle’s long snapper would snap the ball over the punter's head forcing a batched handle and Cadets would take over threatening to score. Two plays later JR Damien Appleby would find paydirt to extend the lead 30-17 Cascade. The next possession for Greencastle would see another three and out, but this time would end on a JR Gavin Weakley interception. Heading into the 4th quarter, the Cascade Cadets wouldn’t look back. Cascade would take the 30-17 lead into the 4th quarter, but not long after it began, FR Brady Trebley would take a quarterback sneak into the endzone for his 1st career rushing touchdown extending the lead 36-17. Cascade would stop the Tiger Cubs on 4th down after JR Damien Appleby stayed disciplined and came up with a huge tackle for a loss making Greencastle turn the ball over on downs. Cascade would come out, but would only need two plays to find the endzone. FR Toby Savini would take the handoff, cut off his blockers and take it into the endzone for a 24 yard run and continue to tack onto the lead making it 42-17 in favor of the Cadets. On the next Greencastle possession, Cadets remained with their ears pinned back and forced the Tiger Cubs into a long 3rd down after a sack by FR Braxton Lewis and SR Walker Van Ness. JR Gavin Weakley would drive on the 3rd down pass and make a great tackle to hold the Tiger Cubs to another 2nd half punt. Two plays later after the Cadets offense went back onto the field, FR Brady Trebley would find FR Dayton Mink out in the flat and Mink would take it 74 yards for the final touchdown of the night for Cascade taking the lead 50-17 and making any Greencastle comeback out of reach. Greencastle would add on one final touchdown, but it wouldn’t be enough. Cascade advanced to the second round of IHSAA Sectional 37 with a 50-24 win over Greencastle.
