Girls Soccer Game #11 Cascade v. Owen Valley, 9/16/24

Monday night's Girls Soccer game between Owen Valley and Cascade could have been a Sectional 27 preview match if the upcoming draw brings the two teams together. As Cascade moved into the Western Indiana Conference for one season, adding various WIC teams like Edgewood, West Vigo, and Owen Valley onto the schedule became fortuitous as these same schools would become part of Cascade’s Sectional competition. The original game between these two schools was to be played on another night but scheduling problems moved the Girls game as the second game of a boy/girl doubleheader. Owen Valley came into the game with a record of 3-5 and the Lady Cadets entered the game with a 5-4-1. With a disappointing loss to Greencastle on Saturday morning fresh in the mind of the Lady Cadets coaching staff and players, the team looked to rebuild their team chemistry as well as find new ways to move the ball up the field without the “kickball” mentality. The Lady Cadets did exactly what they needed to do to build their offensive rhythm as well as disrupt the attacks that Owen Valley attempted to organize. The Cadets built most of their offensive attacks up the sideline which forced Owen Valley to leave more room in the middle of the field. Regan Franklin used this open space in the middle of the field to score all three of her goals in the evening. As the ball was centered back toward the goal from the outside position, Regan was able to shoot deflected shots back into the goal easily as well as take quick shots directly from the outside pass. By the time halftime arrived, the Cadets were up 2-0 on Regan Franklin’s goals and the team had significantly limited any major offensive efforts by Owen Valley. When the game restarted in the second half, Anna Burns gained a great offensive opportunity from a mistake by the Lady Patriots goalie. The Lady Patriots goalie drop kicked the ball right into Anna’s position. Anna quickly settled the ball and struck the ball right back into the goal for her 9th goal of the season. Once the score moved to 4-0 in the second half, players from both team benches got playing times for the rest of the game. One positive highlight was the first Varsity goal scored by sophomore Autum Chattin. As the game was winding down, Autumn was moved to an outside position in the midfield and was using her speed to attack around the outside corner of the Owen Valley defense. Autumn got some space away from the nearest defender and kick the ball just under the outstretched arm of the Owen Valley goalie. Autumn’s goal made the score 5-0 in favor for the Lady Cadets and the game started into a running clock mode. The 5-0 victory over Owen Valley improves the Lady Cadets record to 6-4-1. The Lady Patriots season record falls to 3-6. The Lady Cadets look ahead to three games a row against familiar rivals from past seasons.. The Lady Cadets will host the Danville Lady Warriors on Thursday, September 19th and then host their former Sectional rival Southmont on Monday, September 23rd. The team will then travel to Northview on Wednesday, September 25th to end their stretch of rivals.
