Monday night's Girls Soccer game between Southmont and Cascade has been a rivalry game for the past five seasons. Cascade and Southmont will be conference foes next season, but the two schools have been moved into separate Sectionals (1A v. 2A). The two schools had played each other the past four seasons and the series was split 4-4. The overall pace of the game in the first half was very good and fluid for both teams. The Lady Cadets were able to get a couple of good shots off early. Most of these first half shots struck the side of the goal but the number of the shots gave the team confidence that they could find a way to score a goal. The few shots that Southmont took in the first half were generally long ball breakaways that never really threatened the goal. The first half ended 0-0 with both teams exhibiting some confidence that the game could quickly turn in their favor. The start of the second half favored the Lady Cadets when they took the opening possession and drove quickly toward the Mountie goal. The first shot the Lady Cadets took went just wide and prompted a goal kick restart. The Lady Mounties tried to use their goal kick to clear the pressing Cadet offense but they didn’t get a clean kick and Anna Burns grabbed the ball out of the air. Anna quickly passed the ball to Alexa Rodriguez who was a couple of yards away from the play but the ball bounced off the turf and struck Alexa in the shin. Alexa positioned her body to shield the ball from the pressing Lady Mountie defender as she passed the ball back to Anna who took a touch and then struck another spectacular shot into the back of the goal. The goal was Anna’s 10th of the season and Alexa earned her 5th assist of the season. The goal gave the Lady Cadets some confidence that their play was good and that if they kept up the pressure and intensity, they could earn another goal. Sadly, the Lady Mounties countered with a goal of their own just a couple minutes after the Lady Cadets goal and tied the score back at 1-1. It would be only a couple of more minutes off the clock before the Lady Mounties scored their second goal of the game to put the Lady Cadets under pressure to find game tying goal. The Lady Cadets gave it everything that they could to find that game tying goal but it never came about. The Lady Mounties played a great delay game the last 15:00 minutes and minimized any offensive chances the Lady Cadets could organize. The 2-1 loss to Southmont drops the Lady Cadets record to 6-6-1. The Lady Mounties season record brightens up a bit as their victory total increased to 5 wins against 7 losses. The Lady Cadets turn right back around again and looks ahead to driving to Northview HS (Brazil, IN) on Wednesday night for a boy/girl doubleheader that starts at 5:30 p.m. with the Girls game. The Lady Knights and Lady Cadets played to a 0-0 tie last season and are now aligned in the same IHSAA 2A Sectional competition. Game Summary Cascade 1 Southmont 2 Goals/Assists: 37:53 2H Anna Burns (10), A: Alexa Rodriguez (5)
