Girls Soccer Game #14 Cascade @ Northview, 9/25/24

Wednesday night's Girls Soccer game between Northview and Cascade has been a solid rivalry game for over a decade. The Lady Cadets went on a four season conference championship run in the Western Indiana Conference in the mid 2010s only to be supplanted by the Northview Lady Knights winning the next five conference titles by the start of the 2020s. With both schools now aligned in the same 2A Sectional competition, the chances of a renewed intensity to this rivalry are looking bright for the next couple of seasons. The Lady Cadets (6-6-1) and Lady Knights (6-6) came into Wednesday night’s game with very close records and similar season experiences. The Lady Knights and Lady Cadets played to a 0-0 tie last season. The traditional soccer field will measure around 120 yards long and about 70 yards wide and most teams believe in the playing philosophy that the entire field is a part of movement of the game. Rules of the game prevent the offensive players from just standing whereever they want and this forces players to be aware of their “onside” and “offside” positions. The Northview Lady Knights coaching staff has for a long time tightened the playing field by playing a high line of confrontation near the midfield line. This unique style of play takes a while for offensive and defensive players to adjust to while still reacting to the pressure applied by the aggressive Northview Lady Knights. This aggression from the Lady Knights drew a PK opportunity early in the first half that propelled the Lady Knights to a 1-0 lead with over 30:00 remaining. This 1-0 lead remained for most of the first half but the Lady Cadets slowly started to understand how to play against the high line defense. The Lady Cadets slowly started to create small attacking opportunities that finally clicked together with a goal by Anna Burns with 2:34 remaining in the first half. Anna’s goal came immediately after a throw-in restart that went directly to Ruthie Trump. Ruthie took two touches toward the center of the field and perfectly timed the pass to Anna who struck the ball into the corner of the net. The goal was Anna’s 11th of the season and Ruthie’s assist was her second of the season. Anna’s late goal lifted the halftime score to 1-1. As the second half progressed, the game started to stall out in the middle of the field and neither team dominated the play. The Lady Knights finally broke the 1-1 tie with a second goal at around the 15:00 remaining in the game. The Lady Cadets never could find a game tying goal but they put everything into their last efforts. The game ended with a 2-1 victory for the Northview Lady Knights. The 2-1 loss to Northview drops the Lady Cadets record to 6-7-1. The Lady Knights and Lady Cadets only have a week of games left before the IHSAA Sectional competition starting October 8th. With the upcoming Sectional draw coming up Sunday, September 29th at 7:00 p.m, the Lady Cadets will take some days off to watch the draw and then prepare for their last game of the season against the Lady Falcons from Perry Meridian. Game Summary Cascade 1 Northview 2 Goals/Assists: 2:34 1H Anna Burns (11), A: Ruthie Trump (2)
